A Question

Thank you for your lovely comments on the post about my new wool winder.  It was interesting to note that so many of you already have one of these gadgets.

So now I have a question for you.  When you have wound your yarn into the cute little 'cakes', do you then draw your yarn from the outside of the ball or from the centre?

I like the idea of the centre pull.  The ball doesn't roll about and wander off under the table.  What concerns me is, what happens when you are nearing the end of the ball?  Does it all collapse in on itself in a terrible mess?

This may not seem important, but I feel I should consider the options.  I would love to have your thoughts on the subject, so do let me know.

  1. Yes, I pull from the inside, that is, for me, the reason I got my winder. Yes, as it gets near the very end it does collapse a bit, but not so that you cannot use it and if it gets really collapsed, just wind it up into a little ball and use that because you will be so nearly at the end of the yarn cake it will not matter. Does that make sense? I hope so. Basically, don't worry about collapse because I don't think you will have a problem with it - oh gosh how I hope not after I said that!!! I hope that you keep loving using it!! xx

  2. I have a little pot bowl that is just the right size to hold a yarn cake. Yes you are right Janet, it will fall in on itself when you are getting nearer to the end which is why I keep it in the bowl if I pull from the centre. If you are only using a small amount of yarn to crochet a small item its best to use the yarn from the outside of the ball then it will stay together better, ready for next time.Wrap the last foot or so around the outside and tuck under. (I'm going to see the film Madding Crowd later this week)

  4. Back when I wore nylons or pantyhose I would cut the foot off an old pair and stick yarn in there to keep the ball compressed and tame. Now I use zip top plastic bags with a small corner cut off to lead the yarn through.

I enjoy your blog and I admire the way you finish the things you start. Quickly too. I have such a collection of UFO's.

    1. Thank you Pauline, I like the idea of using nylons to keep the ball of yarn in shape.
